Some tips on buying domain names

When acquiring a domain name, you must keep in mind some important matters to better portray your project or company on the internet. An unsuccessful domain name will offer a negative view to potential customers or users. Therefore, there are some good tips to help you make a good choice.

1.- If you are clear about the content of the website that you are going to develop, it is highly recommended that you register your domain in advance, as the domain name can give you a base to start creating important aspects of your website such as logos, graphics, texts or the name of the site.

2.- In principle, if it is a company website, you should check if ithe company or brand name is available to register. For example, if you want to sell xBrand washing machines, it will always be better to own the domain xBrand.com instead of goodwashingmachines.com. If this is not possible, you should look for a domain name that contains the keyword that best represents the content of your site. In that case, we could choose xBrandwashingmachines.com

3.- It is essential that the domain name is easy to remember. To do this, try to use a short domain name, with friendly words and one or more relevant keywords. Avoid making it like a slogan, e.g. thebestsiteofwashingmachines.com, as it offers little credibility credibility and transparency towards the users. Also avoid using the hyphen (-), as it can give rise to errors when transmitting it verbally.

For information purposes, we recommend that you do not waste your time searching for very short domain names, because currently, for example, there are no available .com domain with less than four letters (and/or numbers).

If you want a domain name which is already registered, you have two possible options: negotiate its purchase with its current owner, which will surely require a big expenditure on your part, or invoke invoke imagination - using subdomains and/or extensions you can make the word(s) you need. For example:

  • "neurotoxicity" -> neurotoxi.city or neuro.toxi.city
  • "neurotoxicities" -> neurotoxiciti.es or neuro.toxiciti.es or neurotoxic.it/ies/

4.- Preferably, try to acquire the .com domain, as it is the most popular, widespread and valued. If your budget allows it, a good option is to have your domain name with all relevant extensions. This will avoid future conflicts. You should also know that as a rule each extension is associated with a different kind of content:

  • .com and .net can be used for any kind of website, whether commercial or not.
  • .org is theoretically reserved for non-profit sites, although this is respected less and less.
  • .name is only for people, not companies or organisations.
  • .info is reserved for informative sites, but currently it is the same as for .org extension
  • .biz is intended only for business sites.
  • .mobi is restricted mobile devices. These sites must provide accessible content to these devices.
  • The ccTLD (Country Code Top Level Domains) such as .co.uk (UK), .us (USA), .es (Spain), .fr (France), etc., or sites where the activity is largely carried out in a certain country. There are some exceptions, for example, .tv domains; although they belong to Tuvalu, are frequently used for sites with audiovisual or television content.
  • GOOD NEWS! - While it is increasingly difficult to find a domain name that is short, easy to remember and related to the content, ICANN has made hundreds of new TLDs (Top-Level Domains) in order to solve these drawbacks. Now you can buy a domain with an extension related to the content of your website, such as: mcdonalds.london, caribbean.tours, trafalgarsquare.hotel, someone.lawyer, etc.

5.- Before registering your new domain it is important that you consider the following tips about security issues:

  • Whenever you register a domain name make sure that the registrar name will be yours. There are companies that are offer cheaper services, but register the domain names with their company name or with a third party name. Always read the registration clauses before hiring.
  • If you find the domain name you need is available, register it as soon as possible. Interest in a domain makes it more valuable, so it may be bought or the price could increase if you wait
  • Do not forget the date for the domain renewal and do it at least more than one month in advance, some "domain-hunters" might be lurking.

We hope that these tips have helped and that you find the service we offer here useful for finding available domains and comparing their prices.
